A groundbreaking new study published in the Journal of Pediatric Maternal & Family Health Chiropractic sheds light on how chiropractic care can support women with twin pregnancies, addressing both musculoskeletal pain and breech presentations, while helping them deliver normally.

It reveals that chiropractic may play a beneficial role during pregnancy and the birth process in cases where the mother is experiencing some type of obstruction of her pelvis and related musculature that is interfering with the baby’s position or the delivery process. “Research is revealing that chiropractic care can play a crucial role during pregnancy, labor and delivery” stated Dr. Matthew McCoy, a chiropractor, public health researcher and editor of the journal that published the study.

“The findings show that chiropractic care can be an effective complementary approach to managing pain and improving outcomes in twin pregnancies” stated Dr. McCoy. “The authors emphasize that chiropractic care focuses on reducing vertebral subluxations to improve nervous system function and mobility, rather than directly treating medical conditions. This holistic approach enables the body’s natural ability to heal and adapt.”

This case series highlights the chiropractic management of three pregnant women carrying twins who presented with back, hip, and pelvic pain, compounded by concerns about breech fetal positions. Each patient experienced significant pain that affected daily activities, including caring for children, performing physically demanding work, or preparing for childbirth. Chiropractic assessments revealed spinal subluxations, muscle hypertonicity, and restricted range of motion in all cases.

Care plans included adjustments using the Torque Release Technique and Webster Technique, delivered twice weekly over varying durations. Across these cases, chiropractic care not only provided substantial pain relief—enabling improved functionality and quality of life—but also contributed to improved fetal positioning, with breech twins turning to a head-down presentation in one case. These outcomes underscore the potential benefits of chiropractic care in addressing musculoskeletal and biomechanical concerns during twin pregnancies.

In all cases, chiropractic care alleviated musculoskeletal pain and improved function without adverse effects. These results highlight the potential of chiropractic adjustments in managing twin pregnancies, addressing both discomfort and breech presentations effectively. The study’s author called for additional research to investigate the clinical implications of chiropractic in this population.
