Chiropractic Care Helps Resolve Frank Breech Pregnancy and Relieve Pain, New Research Study Shows

Originally published: 2025-10-10

October 2025—In the latest issue of the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health, Chiropractic (Volume 2025, Pages 79-86), a newly published research study adds to a growing body of research highlighting the role of chiropractic care in managing difficult pregnancies, including breech presentations.

Case Study Overview

The case describes the chiropractic management of a 32-year-old pregnant woman in her third trimester who was experiencing significant low back pain (LBP), pelvic girdle pain (PGP), and had a confirmed frank breech fetal presentation via MRI. Her symptoms included discomfort in the hips, sacroiliac joints, and gluteal muscles, often radiating into her thighs. Examination revealed signs of vertebral subluxation including spinal misalignment, muscular tension, and limited pelvic mobility.

Using the Webster Technique—a chiropractic method specifically designed for pregnant patients—the chiropractor applied a series of gentle, non-invasive adjustments targeting the sacrum and surrounding soft tissues. Over 18 visits, the patient reported significant relief from pain. Remarkably, at 37 weeks and 1 day gestation, she delivered vaginally with her baby in the ideal vertex (head-down) position, despite the earlier breech diagnosis.

The success of the case is attributed to the correction of vertebral subluxations. As the study explains: “The nervous system controls and coordinates all functions of the body and structural shifts in the spine can occur that obstruct the nerves and interfere with their function. These structural shifts can lead to obstruction of the nerves and it is this obstruction, called vertebral subluxations, that chiropractors correct. By removing the structural shifts, chiropractic improves nerve supply and function.”

Rather than attempting to turn the baby directly, chiropractic care aims to reduce the structural and neurological interference that may prevent the baby from positioning itself naturally. By restoring pelvic balance and enhancing nervous system communication, the Webster Technique helps the body function more efficiently—often allowing the baby the space and freedom to move into a head-down position on its own.

Importantly, the authors emphasize that chiropractic does not treat breech presentation itself. Instead, the focus is on identifying and correcting vertebral subluxation, allowing the body to heal and adapt as it is designed to do.

This case adds to a growing number of documented successes using chiropractic care during pregnancy, particularly in situations involving fetal malposition and maternal musculoskeletal complaints. Continued research and clinical documentation are encouraged to further validate chiropractic’s role in prenatal care and its potential to support safer, more natural birth outcomes.

Future Research and Considerations

Future research should explore larger patient populations, long-term maternal and neonatal outcomes, and controlled comparisons between chiropractic care and standard medical management for breech pregnancies. Such studies would provide more definitive evidence on the effectiveness, safety, and potential mechanisms behind chiropractic’s role in influencing fetal positioning and maternal comfort.

Additionally, collaborative research involving obstetricians, midwives, and chiropractors could offer deeper insights into interdisciplinary care models. As interest in holistic, non-invasive options for pregnancy continues to grow, understanding how chiropractic fits into broader maternal healthcare is essential for empowering women with safe and effective choices during pregnancy and birth.
