The Case of Joanna Kowalczyk & the Chiropractic Scare Narrative: Unraveling the Truth

Originally published: 2025-02-01

Introduction: Why This Case Matters

The tragic death of Joanna Kowalczyk has been used by major media outlets as a sensationalized attack on chiropractic care, portraying her as yet another victim of an "unsafe" profession. The Daily Mail, New York Post, and People Magazine all published misleading headlines implying that a chiropractic neck adjustment caused her death—conveniently ignoring key facts from the coroner’s report and broader medical trends that should have been considered.

The reality of this case is far more complex, and it exposes glaring failures in medical care, paramedic oversight, and media accountability—while also highlighting a critical blind spot in modern healthcare: the rising incidence of vascular events post-COVID and post-vaccine.

This series of articles will break down the case into three key aspects:

  1. What the News Reported vs. Reality – Analyzing the logical fallacies and disinformation in media coverage.

  2. What the Coroner’s Report Actually Said – Examining Joanna’s medical timeline and the failures of emergency medicine and paramedics in properly diagnosing and treating her condition.

  3. A Detailed Timeline of Events & critical decision making errors

  4. Risk Management Strategies for Chiropractors – Providing evidence-based recommendations to ensure chiropractors can mitigate risks and protect both their patients and their profession in similar cases.

A Brief Overview of the Case

On September 26, 2021, Joanna Kowalczyk, a 29-year-old woman, suffered a vascular injury during a personal training session at a gym. She reported hearing a “crack” in her neck, followed by a severe headache. She sought medical attention the next day at the emergency department, where doctors suspected a hemorrhage and recommended a lumbar puncture. However, she self-discharged before completing the full workup.

Seeking alternative care, Joanna visited a chiropractor and underwent four adjustments over several weeks. During her final session, she experienced neurological symptoms consistent with a stroke—including dizziness, double vision, tingling, and vomiting. Despite being advised to go to the hospital, she refused medical transport.

Paramedics were later called, but misdiagnosed her stroke as a migraine and failed to transport her to the hospital that day. By the time she was eventually hospitalized on October 17, her condition had deteriorated beyond the point of recovery, and she died two days later.

Yet, instead of scrutinizing the failures of emergency medical providers, the media chose to scapegoat the chiropractor.

The Missing Factor: Rising Vascular Events Since COVID and the COVID Vaccine

One glaring omission in both the media coverage and the coroner’s report is the failure to consider the widespread increase in vascular events since the onset of COVID-19 and the introduction of COVID vaccines.

What We Know:
✔️ COVID-19 infection is associated with increased rates of arterial dissections, clotting disorders, and stroke.
✔️ COVID-19 vaccines, particularly mRNA-based vaccines, have been linked to vascular complications, including myocarditis, blood clots, and cerebrovascular events.
✔️ Doctors worldwide have reported spikes in strokes, aneurysms, and unexplained vascular injuries in younger populations since 2021.

Yet, despite Joanna’s young age and her sudden vascular dissection, no investigation appears to have been conducted into whether she had a recent COVID infection or vaccination.

This omission is a major failure by both her treating physicians and the coroner. In a time when vascular events are occurring at higher rates across all healthcare settings, every practitioner—whether medical, chiropractic, or emergency medicine—should be screening for these risk factors in every patient.

Why This Series Matters

The purpose of this series is not just to correct the misinformation surrounding chiropractic care—it is to highlight the broader issues in modern healthcare, including:

🔎 The media’s deliberate distortion of facts to push an anti-chiropractic agenda.
🔎 The failure of medical providers to consider all possible causes of Joanna’s vascular event, including COVID-related factors.
🔎 The need for chiropractors to proactively manage risk and enhance patient safety protocols.

By examining the evidence and challenging the official narrative, we can work toward truth-based healthcare discussions, ensuring patients receive the best care possible—without fear-mongering or political bias.
